Side Scan Sonar

CASE STUDY: Sidescan Sonar Study to Locate Washed Out Culvert

Mainstream Commercial Divers, Inc. was contracted by the Memphis District of the United States Corps of Engineers to perform an underwater inspection of a culvert that was disrupting the flow dynamics of the stream system at Block Hole, Missouri. The culvert had apparently washed out during a high water event and was resting on the slough bottom near the Block Hole boat ramp.

The MCDI crew was able to locate the culvert and mark the geographic position using side scan sonar. A WAAS corrected GPS was used to position the dive boat over the top of the culvert. The diver descended onto the side scan target and verified that the missing culvert was lying at that location.

CASE STUDY: Side Scan Sonar Study of Fleeting Area to Locate Possible Hazards to Navigation

Mainstream Commercial Divers, Inc. was recently contracted to perform side scan sonar services in an area of the Upper Mississippi River that our customer was planning to use as a fleeting area in the future. Our customer needed to know if there were any hazards to navigation in the area and, if so, obtain information on their exact location. MCDI's final report to the customer included image maps like the ones shown above with an overlay of data obtained from a hydrographic study.
